Friction Stir Welding (FSW)
KMT Group was the first Finnish company to start developing industrial know-how for the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) method. We adopted the new technology in our production in the autumn of 2002 and since then, we have offered FSW subcontracting services.
The FSW method is simple. A rotating tool generates friction heat, which plasticizes the work pieces in the joint area. The work pieces are joined together almost like the base material.
FSW is commonly used in widening profiles by joining several extructions in parallel. The method is applicable e.g. for welding aluminium enclosure constructions, for which it gives additional strength and durability.
The most noteworthy benefits of FSW include time efficiency, high fatigue resistance for the joints and measuring accuracy. When welding long joints, this method is especially cost-effective. KMT Group is the pioneer of FSW in Finland.
